Cultural playground 'De Ceuvel' was founded in 2014 with a lease expiring in early 2027. The project is built on a former shipyard with a plant-based café, 17 houseboat studios, a hotel, a greenhouse, multi-use spaces all based in a phytoremediation ecosystem.

De Ceuvel exemplifies why free cultural spaces matter, yet remain fragile. In today's economy, capital-driven development increasingly threatens such places, eroding something vital: spaces where creativity flourishes without market pressure. They democratize art, foster cross-economic community, and build urban resilience. Yet gentrification and real estate speculation constantly endanger these independent anchors, depleting cities of cultural vitality and social cohesion.
